Natanz Fire Temple
In the Sassanid era, the fire temple played an important role in the daily life of all people. they worshiped Ahura Mazda daily in the fire temple and gave offerings.
For this reason, the remains of numerous fire temples have been left all over Iran. One of these fire temples, which is of the four-arched type and is located in the center of Iran, is the Natanz fire temple, located in Isfahan province. A fire temple that is under destruction.
History of Natanz Fire Temple:
The city of Natanz itself is very old and its foundation dates back to before the Sassanid period. But the exact date of the construction of the fire temple is not known. It can be built both at the beginning and at the end of the Sassanid period, and this means a 400-year difference in the time of construction. In the Islamic era, due to the small size of the city and its distance from important urban centers, it was not converted into a mosque and has maintained its use. According to some evidence, it has been used as a lookout post in recent centuries until during the Pahlavi era, when ancient Iran was paid attention to, Natanz fire temple was registered in Iran National Heritage List in 1934.
What is the architecture of Natanz fire temple?
A four-arched has been created in an area of about 122 meters, and from the four-arched, its four pillars can be seen on two platforms that are built one above the other. Only the four columns and the southern arch and a little of the edge of the dome of this ancient fire temple are still standing, and the other three arches and the roof of the fire temple have collapsed due to the earthquake and lack of restoration. The healthiest part of the building is its southern side. Natanz fire temple is made of materials such as river rubble in large and irregular sizes and plaster and soil mortar. Wooden timber is used in the skeleton of the arch and plaster is used to cover the inner surface of the building. Some columns also have a special coating of plaster and mud. The effects of termites show their attack on the timbers, and the dome of this valuable heritage was destroyed when the timbers were destroyed by the earthquake. Also there are traces of painting on a thin layer of plaster.
