Takhti Tomb

In the south of Tehran, in the 1100-year-old Ibn Babvieh Cemetery, there is a grave of a man who is one of the symbols of the struggle of the Iranian people against the Pahlavi regime. The tomb of Gholamreza Takhti, a famous Iranian wrestler and Olympic champion, has been registered as one of Iran National Heritage List.Now it's time to turn the pages of Iran's history 60 years ago.

What do you know about Gholamreza Takhti?

Gholamreza Takhti was the Asian, World and Olympic champion in freestyle wrestling in the 50s and 60s. In addition, in Iran, he became the champion of ancient sports(Pahlevani and zoorkhaneh rituals) and earned the title of “the world champion”.

During his short life, he always gave chivalry to his people. During social crises and natural disasters, he provided a lot of help to the affected people. In addition to his sports activities, he was a member of one of the most important opposition parties to the Shah of Iran, which made people pay more attention to him.He finally died in 1968 at a young age. His suspicious death was called suicide at that time, and it remains one of the most controversial deaths in the last 100 years of Iran.Because some researchers believe that he was suspiciously killed in the hotel due to his disagreement with the crown prince. With the victory of the Islamic revolution in Iran, Takhti became one of the symbols of the struggle against the oppression of the Pahlavi regime and a popular figure.

The architecture of the Takhti Tomb:

The current tomb of Takhti is a new structure with modern architecture. Of course, in addition to Takhti, other celebrities are also buried next to him. The tomb building is made of dark gray granite stones with black spots. The interior of the tomb is open on 3 sides and an image of Takhti is artistically carved on the inner part of one of the entrances. This building has been registered in Iran National Heritage List.
